Under The Umbrella with Dre Slaman of Farm To Fit

This week, we are excited to go Under The Umbrella with the amazing Dre Slaman!

Dre is a melanoma survivor and the co-owner of Farm To Fit, an Oregon-based meal delivery service with calorie specific meal plans using locally-sourced ingredients. In the past decade, Dre and her husband, G. Scott, moved to Portland from Los Angeles, where they both worked as actors and have settled into a Pacific NW lifestyle based around good food and entrepreneurship. Working in the food industry is in Dre's blood, as her family has always owned and operated several restaurants and cafes in the San Diego area.

Name, Age, Location

Dre Slaman, 36, Portland

How would you describe your lifestyle?

I describe my lifestyle as a “hustle," but I wouldn’t trade it in for anything.  I’m a city girl at heart so it’s mostly fast paced. I don’t sit still much and am a little bit of a workaholic, which is why my husband and I were inspired to start Farm to Fit when we moved here, over five years ago. We were looking for fresh, healthy, portion-controlled meals. When I'm not running the company, tasting new menu items or chasing my two-year-old around, I also serve as President of the Portland Area Theatre Alliance or you can find me rehearsing for a project.

When did skincare become a priority?

As an actress, skincare has always been a priority…but mostly for vanity.  Not until I was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma, when I was 23, did it become about saving my life!

Why is your skin a priority?

Because I want to live!  And since I haven’t yet found the fountain of youth, I have to take care of what I've got. I believe it's important to fuel our skin with good food and I do that by eating fresh, seasonal food from our own menu as well as exercise and good skincare.

What is your healthy skin regimen?

I am religious about washing my face twice a day. I always use a toner and moisturize. My supermarket go-to is the Oil of Olay Age Defying line - the products are light and not too smelly and the containers are easy to travel with. I also love, love Tu’el’s “C power”, a vitamin C serum, and I have just recently started using coconut oil as a moisturizer, particularly on my eyes and neck. (Both antioxidants) Someone told me to use it on my daughter’s diaper rash and it worked like a charm.  Ever since then, I’ve been sold!  Oh, and SPF 30+ sunscreen, everyday rain or shine.

What is your favorite piece of clothing in your closet, and why?

Moto jacket hands down.  I wear it with everything.

Which shoes do you pair with your little black dress?

Classic black patent leather stilettos.

Your jeans?

Keen’s Bern Baby Bern boots.  It’s the only good thing about the rain.

Okay, okay not the ONLY good thing but I do wear them every day during fall and winter and just keep replacing them. I think I'm on my fourth pair.  I’ve asked them to contact me directly if they ever decide to discontinue them.  Or, during the summer, Rainbow brand flip flops -the originals. You can take the girl out of San Diego, but you can’t take the San Diego out of the girl.

How would you define your personal style?

California Urban chic.  Classic lines, no frills or patterns, and simple colors.

If you could go back, what do you wish you could teach your younger self?

Relax. Worry less. Don’t freak out so much!  And stop rooting for the Padres, they will never win.
