Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does SUMMERSKIN chemically treat their clothing to provide sun protection?
No. With a background in pharmacy our founder Summer Kramer refuses to add any unnecessary chemicals to our clothing or bodies. This way, the sun protection level does not wash out and will last the lifetime of the garment.
Q: How does SUMMERSKIN achieve their UPF?
The UPF of our clothing is achieved by a blend of the thickness of the fabric, the tightness of the weave, and the color. Each fabric has been extensively researched and repeatedly tested to ensure a UPF of 50+.
Q: I’ve never received a sunburn through my normal clothing before. Therefore, isn’t all clothing sun protective?
Your average t-shirt, dress, etc. protects you from UVB rays which are the primary cause of skin reddening and sunburns. However, not all clothing protects you from UVA rays which penetrate into the skin more deeply and can result in advanced aging and skin cancer. Sun protective clothing protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Read more about sun protective clothing.
Q: What is the difference between SPF and UPF?
SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factor refers to the amount of protection provided by lotions, makeup products, lip balms, etc. UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, is the amount of protection provided by textiles and clothing. The principles of SPF and UPF are very similar. Ideally, SPF and UPF should be used together.
Q: Do I still need to wear sunscreen if I am wearing sun protective clothing?
It is important to always apply sunscreen to the crucial areas of the body that clothing does not cover such as the ears, back of the neck, scalp, etc. Read more about what a complete sun protection program looks like.
Q: Should I wear sun protective clothing year round or only in the summer?
Although it is more obvious in the summer, the sun’s damaging UV rays are present 365 days a year. Keep in mind that clouds only block the visible light. UV rays, which are invisible to the eye, are still reaching you. Read more about about the importance of sun protection on cloudy days.
Q: How do I care for my SUMMERSKIN?
Always read the care label and instructions before laundering. Because our UPF level is achieved through weave, thickness, and color rather than chemical treatments, it will not wash out while you care for your garment.
